I may have missed the original question, but I got the impression that the new planet was created from the mass of the nebula. Recall that in the taped briefing, it was stated that the Genesis device worked on a mass, not necesarily a planet. Additionally, note that after the planet was formed, the nebula was no where to be seen. Finally, if it had worked only on the planetoid, the Enterprise would not have had to make tracks the way it did, since the Genesis effect seems to die out when it runs out of mass to work on. murray at intelqa
