I am seeking information/education on the NetBIOS programmer interface. As I understand it NetBIOS allows me to write DOS applications that send/recv messages on a network. For our application we are running an ethernet to interconnect MS-DOS systems with Unix (ISC 386/ix, System V on an NCR Tower, and BSD 4.3). I need to write a DOS application which can communicate via the ethernet to processes on a Unix system. I'm hoping the NetBIOS will supply a high level interface to network services so I can send and receive messages from a DOS application and a Unix process. Questions: 1. Are the above assumptions correct? 2. Are there any magazine articles or books giving examples of programming with NetBIOS? 3. Our ethernet boards are 3com 3c505's. Can NetBIOS interact with this controller? Do we need additionall hardware/software? Do we need a different type of controller? 4. Will NetBIOS allow a DOS application to communicate to an internet socket on the Unix system? 5. Is there anyone out there doing this who's willing to give some advice? Please e-mail any replies as I do not regularly read this newsgroup. I don't know the definite answers to your questions, but there is a book you might want to look up. It's "C Programmer's Guide to NetBIOS" by W. David Schwaderer, published by Howard W. Sams & Company. It goes into great detail about the NetBIOS interface and how to write C programs to talk to it.
