[net.movies] Star Trek II Graphics

The molecule graphics during the Genesis briefing were obviously done
at UCSF (the SF Chronicle recently ran one of these images on the cover of
its Sunday magazine section, labelled as a PICTURE of a mouse gene (sic)).
But, did you know that the following sequence, depicting a planet under
the influence of Genesis, was entirely computer-generated. It was the
work of another arm of Lucasfilm, the graphics group named in the credit.

The majority of the graphics and special effects were done at Industrial
Light and Magic, Inc., of Marin (north of S.F.), CA. The LucasFilm-owned
special effects group is considered to be the leading effects and
computer-based film tecjnology group in existence... This summer alone,
they are responsible for the effects in "ET", "Poltergeist", "The Wrath of
Khan", and at least one other movie that I haven't yet seen.
