I have MS-Windows running on an AT clone with 512K of memory. I plan to upgrade the memory to at least 640K. But I am also considering just going to 1024K (1M) and using the extra memory for other purposes (e.g. ramdisk, cache, etc.). From reading the Windows manuals, it is unclear whether or not I can utilize this "above-640" block of memory with SMARTDrive. I am not sure if this memory is considered to be "expanded" or "extended" or neither. Nor am I sure what other ramdisk offerings are available that will use this memory. Can someone please explain to me the implementations of having ram in the adress space between 640K and 1024K? Are there not other things like video, etc, mapped into this address space? Please enlighten me! Thanks in advance for pointers/tips/etc. -- Mark Jeghers 408-578-9145 [h] "So begins our dreamtime, Motorola Computer Systems 408-864-2629 [w] they hunt him like the dinosaur, ...hplabs!hpda!\ we the pure, they the savage innocent, ....uunet!apple!motcsd!greek!mark how we crush our existance after all..."

You can use the extra memory as expanded or extended. If expanded, it must be LIM 4.0 for windows to use it. If extended, you can use smartdrive or ramdrive. Note, however, that probgrams that use LIM 3.2 can still use the expanded memory if it is 3.2. For instance Microsoft Word, if invoked from windows, can still use it even though windows cannot. The memory on the add on board is not allocated from 640 K to 1 MB. If it backfills, the allocation stops at 640 K and resumes at 1 MB.
