[comp.sys.ibm.pc] The DOS 4 serial number is on the boot sector

jrw@uncecs.edu (James R. White) (10/10/89)

Someone asked how DOS stores the serial numbers on a disk. I have
MS-DOS 4.01 so I used DEBUG to load the boot sector from two disks
into memory and compared them. They were different in four locations
from 27 to 2A. Reversing the order of these bytes gives the serial
number. Hard disks are the same.

I now do a lot of work on DEAD-C0DE. What is the serial number of
your disk, AC1D-FACE? Do you boot off CAFE-F00D? (Or do you think
that this is ABAD-1DEA?)
