[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Northgate 386

grs@alobar.ATT.COM (Gregg Siegfried) (10/24/88)

Hello all.

I have an associate that is considering the purchase of a Northgate 386
tower machine. I notice these are advertised regularly in Computer Shopper.

I'm interested in hearing from anyone that has experience with Northgate
systems in general, but particularly the 386 tower. Any comments concerning
reliability, support, etc. would be especially helpful. I believe he will
be running Unix in some form on it, hence the crosspost.

Please send comments via email, and if people express interest, I'll
summarize when I finish collecting the information.

Thanks in advance,
Gregg Siegfried

If anyone out there has had any experience with the Northgate 386, good or
bad, I'd like to hear about it. In particular, I'd like to hear about their
service and reliability. Also, after buying one, did you think it was a good
deal?

Thanks. Warren

I am interested in getting information on Northgate 386 systems
(20 and 25 MHz). If you are using these machines, do they live
up to the PC Magazine reviews (May 89)? Also, I read in Jan 89
BYTE that it is difficult to get warranty service from Northgate.
Any experiences?

I've been using a Northgate 386/16 (heavily!) for about 6 months with
no problems. It took them awhile to deliver initially (they threw in
a free mouse as an apology for the delay) but the system worked great
after that. Their tech support was extremely helpful when I had some
hardware problems that were preventing the installation of UNIX (the
UNIX couldn't handle some bad cylinders on the disk) -- even though
they themselves were UNIX-naive.

I've never had to send the machine back so I couldn't comment about
warranty service.

We purchased a Northgate "SuperMicro 286" around 6 months ago.
At the time Northgate was marketing the machine as their fastest
286 ever - and faster than the other vendors. I was disappointed
that they were really running this 16 mhz 0 wait state board at
20 mhz with 1 wait state.

Their turn around for replacement parts is overnight (except in
the case of the motherboard). Northgate stands behind their products -
but then that might explain why their prices are on the high side.
