A question. Since E.T. had the power of telekinesis, why didn't he use it to escape the government agents in the beginning of the movie, to get back to his ship? Could it be because he couldn't use it on himself, but only on inanimate objects like a bicycle? Any other suggestions? Steve Bratman

This was floating around in the mail, and I was asked to post it: I did skim through the ET stuff on the net. I did notice how fast the little guy was going at the beginning of the movie, staying well ahead of the running humans. He might not have flown to the ship because he was so surprised he didn't think about it (like why did he wait to levitate the boys on the bikes until they were about to be caught?), or maybe the ship wouldn't or couldn't open it's door under flight, and he knew it. The lighted finger only appeared (to my recollection) when ET was going to heal or fix something, and could possibly represent some life-giving force (like his glowing chest?). I'm not sure about these myself.
