[comp.sys.ibm.pc] MSC 5.1 Under OS/2

ncperson@ndsuvax.UUCP (Brett G. Person) (10/03/89)

I'm considering making the jump to OS/2. Whar I'd like to know is what
version of Microsoft C do I need to get to write code under OS/2. Will MSC
5.x work for the Presentation Manager code, or do I need to buy a special
version of the compiler?

Thanks

The "official" C compiler for OS/2 is MSC 5.1. When I got my upgrade from 5.0
to 5.1 I was offered the opportunity to buy just the DOS part of the package as
the upgrade, or the whole thing with OS/2 support, so it is possible to have 5.1
and not have OS/2 support. I have no knowledge as to whether it is possible to buy
the package off the shelf with only DOS support, but I would guess that the
package you buy in the store contains the "whole thing".

See your local software dealer (or Microsoft) with questions.

good luck!

If you have it for DOS it will only work in the Dos box, you might call
Microsoft and check into it.
But to answer your question, yes there is a MSC 5.1 for OS/2, actually it
came to us with OS/2 and DOS compilers bundled together. The setup program lets
you configure for OS/2 or DOS or both, and the libraries and Codeview are most
certainly different.

As far as IBM OS/2 is concerned, the "official" compiler is IBM C/2.

Note that OS/2 1.0 shipped before MS C 5.1, with its dual-mode support, did.

Yeah, it was $25 for real-mode only and $75 for dual-mode, if I remember right.

Does anybody know what the "official" C compiler was for the other OEM's
versions of OS/2 1.0 (e.g. Zenith, etc.)

Wow - someone actually interested in running OS2. There aren't many
of those around :) - no really I am running SCO Xenix and I can create
executables for PC-DOS, MS-DOS, OS2 and Xenix. Likewise the MSC compiler
(5.1 and above) can product binaries for DOS and OS2.

Nah, he doesn't count. He wants to write programs for OS/2. Everybody who
*has* OS/2 seems to be a developer hoping to sell something to a *user* of
OS/2.  OS/2 *customers* are a rare breed indeed. 8}
