Okay. Okay. If you're REALLY bothered by inconsistencies, ponder this: Khan beamed up Genesis, supposedly based on Kirk's communicator coordinates (even though the device was across the room from him). So why please didn't he beam Kirk up when Kirk started browbeating him ("Your aim isn't very good, Khan")?? Is this supposed to illustrate incipient senility on the part of Khan, or the screenwriter? Also, the Reliant's captain blasted somebody (not himself) when Kirk's son attacked Kirk inside the planet. Who got blasted, anyway? Everybody from the Enterprise was still there...

I think that Khan had already locked on to the Genesis device based on coordinates sent him by the Reliant captain and Chekov. I believe that one of the first comments sent to Khan by the Reliant captain was "You've got the coordinates of the Genesis device now ..." Thus he didn't use the communicator coordinates by themselves to get to it, and without help from Kirk he might not have enough information to beam Kirk up.
