[comp.sys.ibm.pc] EMS vs EXTENDED vs windows vs huh?

beamon@ge-dab.GE.COM (Bill Beamon) (10/20/89)

have a '286 motherboard with the Suntac chip set which allows you to set
additional memory as EXTENDED or EXPANDED with a jumper setting. The EMS
driver, EMS.SYS is included (source code, even!). I have 2 meg of DRAM
aboard which I would like to use with Windows. Further, I'd like to use
programs which take more memory than is left (of the 640K) when Windows
is loaded (like Scanedit, which requires 549K free memory). The board is
peppy enough, but I'd like to use the 1404K of extra memory for something
other than slowing up the boot cycle while it is being counted and checked.

Q: With the jumper and EMS driver loaded, how do I tell what KIND of EMS
I have? 3.2? 4.0? generic? The board manual didn't say, but I must admit
their command of English is better than my command of Chinese.

Q2: What driver do I need to do the job? (Assuming the chip set is okay).

Windows trys to install HIMEM.SYS, which frees up 40K or so above 640K,
but it just barfs and hangs the system. The SMArtdrv.sys is okay, but I
don't know how much the cache helps. I even changed the BIOS (DTK to Award).

Is there a 286 To THe Max or Quarterdeck driver that will do the job? I have
reasonable deals lined up on a '386 or '386SX board, but I'd really like to
get the '286 playing correctly first. There may be others in a similar boat.
Any leads would be much appreciated and thanks in advance.
