Ponder this. Khan set the timer on the Genesis arming device to detonate the thing in some number of minutes (anyone remember)? If the time could be set to anything, why didn't he just set it to something like 1, and thus prevent ANY chance of the Enterprise escaping. It seems he makes too many assumptions, like this one in that he thought they would never make it out, in the movie to be really as clever as he was on the TV show.
