as a new owner of one of these machines (with enhanced vga monitor and paradise 16+ vga, miniscribe 85 meg hard drive), i have a few questions: 1. with windows and adding additional memory: if i get an at-type extended memory board and add 2/4 meg of 80-ns memory, do i need to change anything in my win.ini file? can i then run more than one virtual window with more than 600k? 2. the 85 meg miniscribe drive -- a) is formated into three partitions for a total of 70 meg. is the loss of 15 meg disk space typical for using the miniscribe hard disk partitioning program? b) does a hard drive (miniscribe ) lowlevel formatting program come with the system? c) can i use speedstor and get more space out of my drive? 3. unix on the sx -- a) can i run unix on the 80386sx? in particular, microport system v\386? b) with 2 meg total, can unix run (i know it will be swappinng like crazy). any infor would be appreciated. - bob

If you have a 6085 or 3085 the formatted capacity is 72MB. Has nothing to do with the partitioning program. | b) does a hard drive (miniscribe ) lowlevel formatting program | come with the system? | c) can i use speedstor and get more space out of my drive? The partitioning program has little to do with the disk size. Various programs may slow operation, though. | 3. unix on the sx -- | a) can i run unix on the 80386sx? in particular, microport | system v\386? UNIX will run. If you can get MNP for free it might be worth the time. They are in Chapter 11. | b) with 2 meg total, can unix run (i know it will be swappinng | like crazy). It may not be that bad. Because programs can be paged the whole program doesn't have to swap. For single user you should be okay, although you will take a hit if you get a lot of stuff running at once. -- bill davidsen (davidsen@crdos1.crd.GE.COM -or- uunet!crdgw1!crdos1!davidsen) "The world is filled with fools.
