[net.music] Cross between a pan pipe and a synth in Liquid Sky?

peterr@utcsrgv.UUCP (Peter Rowley) (05/06/84)

Does anyone know the identity of the instrument that sounds like a cross
between a pan pipe and a synthesizer, used a lot in the soundtrack for
the recent movie Liquid Sky? It is also used in a recent Jordache
commercial that attempts to sell jeans by associating them with alienation.

On the subject of FM: Nash the Slash has released a few things since FM
split. Ben Mink also released a solo album. Lately, FM has been playing,
with the original line-up, around Toronto, so there might be a new album
eventually, I suppose. Nash the Slash is having some solo success with a
single called "1984", so that might get in the way.

It's actually a Fairlight CMI digital synthesiser. (The soundtrack to LS
says so on the back.) The actual setting was probably a whistle sampled,
and mixed with a few harmonics to give it a more ``synthetic'' sound.
