I won't say what my opinion of Fido software is. The above isn't correct. With UUPC software, a modem, and news reader software (such as rn) one can have a fully functioning USENET and UUCPnet node. The Mush mailer is available for anonymous ftp from ucbvax.berkeley.edu and these other pieces are available for anonymous ftp from a number of places. Most assuredly Ufgate is not the only solution nor was it the first solution. UUPC has been around for quite a while now. The above are all freely distributable software to the best of my recollection but you should check the software itself to be sure.

UUPC has been around for quite a while now. Has there been any update of the UUPC (INTERIM.ARC)? Is someone actively working on is ? Steven -- Steven V. Christensen U.C. If so, how is it accessible? -- # "And now they do not see light, it is brilliant in the skies" -- Sefer Bahir #

The latest IBM-PC/MS-DOS UUPC is available for download at van-bc.wimsey.bc.ca in the file "interim.arc". Call 604-939-4756 (for 1200/2400 baud) or 604-939-4782 (for Telebit PEP) and use the login name "guest" with the password "guest", then issue the "help" command at the shell prompt for on-line help. Depending on which speed you call in at, you might have to press the space-bar key a few times to get to the login prompt. The guest login above supports [XYZ]modem, if you would like to call in via UUCP, use the login "nuucp", and password "nuucp", instead. The name of the file in this case is "~/uupc/interim.arc". For those who would like to retrieve the file via Anonymous FTP over the Internet, van-bc.wimsey.bc.ca's IP address is [128.189.233.155], and the file name is "uupc/interim.arc". The file should be transfered in binary mode. The size of the file "interim.arc" is about 128.5 K-bytes. This interim distribution contains both sources and binaries, and is dated May/88. This version is newer than the official 1.0 distribution posted last summer, and is also the base where the release 2.0 work started from. ...Sam -- Samuel Lam <skl@wimsey.bc.ca> or {uunet,ubc-cs}!wimsey.bc.ca!skl
