[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Microchannel SCSI?

davis@udel.EDU (Michael Davis) (11/06/89)

Has anyone seen/heard/tested such a beast? I've given up trying to replace
my Model 50's 20MB HD for under $500. Maybe now I can work around it!
Any help, experiences, suggestions will be appreciated.

Adaptec makes a AHA-1640 SCSI Microchannle host adapter, but it only available
through OEM channels. May never be available through distribution, as the
support for it is quite hairy. Microchannle is not microchannel is not
microchannel. Through the developement period of the 1640 each time we
tested a microchannel machine we found something else we had to do to make
th adapter work. To date, the 1640 will still not work in a IBM Model 70.
Although I think some things are in the works to correct that. But due
to each and every micro-channel machine being slightly different it makes
it rahter difficult to put the host adapter in distibution. It's quite
a shame too. The 1640 is software compaible to the 1540 family of AT
adapters, but has a 20Mhz processor as opposed to the 10Mhz processor on
the 1540 family. It really screams. The only widely available palce I
can think of that would have it would be Tandy. Although keep in mind
that it may not work in a Model 50. Nothing Tandy has done, it's just
that MCA is not MCA is not MCA.
