[net.movies] USENET-MOVIES@SRI-UNIX no longer broadcasts to Movie^.pa@PARC-MAXC

Hamilton.ES@PARC-MAXC@sri-unix (07/06/82)

Due to a number of complaints from Xeroids about the volume and
inappropriateness of the msgs from USENET about Star Trek II sent
to Movie^.pa@PARC-MAXC, Andrew Knutsen has at my request cut the
link which automatically forwards <USENET msgs posted to net .movie>
to Movie^.pa. However, any msgs sent directly to Movie^.pa will
still be forwarded to net.movie. This is a relatively small volume
of mail.

As explained to me by Steve Bellovin, the only easy way for USENET
to tie into our new StarTrek list would be for them to set up a
new newsgroup. The way it seems to work is that USENET people
post a msg to a sort of electronic bulletin board called a newsgroup.
When a msg percolated its way over to SRI-UNIX, special software
there would convert it to an ARPANET msg.

If the STII, ET, etc., trivia ever dies down, we may consider
re-establishing the USENET -> Movie^ link.  Meanwhile, a brief
review of Movie^'s informal "rules": a submission should be a
reasonably self-contained review, and not part of an ongoing discussion.
You don't have to write a grand essay, but your submission should
consist of more that statements of the form "A is great; B is lousy."

Finally, please remember to apply the CHOP hack against your msg
before you submit it. Your msg are still going out into USENET
land, where some folks can't handle long paragraphs without CRs.

I hope some of you Junk-ies who got turned off recently will rejoin
the fold.
