[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Organizing free form data

HBX@PSUVM.BITNET (Terry Harrison 336 Beam BAB 3-3357) (11/09/89)

i need a reference to a particular type of software, although i am not
sure that it exists. i suspect that other net readers would also
welcome some pointers in this direction.

i earn my living as an academic. so i read lots of papers and make
references to other's work in the papers i write. however, i find
that i read many more papers than i used to, and am having trouble
keeping track of where i found a particular idea. i used to be able to
track all of this in my head but am not so successful anymore.

what i would dearly like to find is a (database?) package that lets me
put in free form statements like:
PARALLEL PROCESSING-ANOMALOUS SPEEDUPS-MULTIOBJECTIVE LINEAR PROGAMMING-
ORSA JOURNAL OF COMPUTING
etc. then i would like to be able to search through this in a number of
different ways. my primary aim is to build some form of
electronic storage of the main ideas of my reading in a way that i can
conveniently access it later.

perhaps someone has already implemented a means for doing this kind of
thing. i would very much like to hear about it. if enough people respond
directly to me via e-mail, i will summarize and post.
