[net.movies] Poltergiest

Saw Poltergiest on Monday night. Two things, take somebody to hang on to, and empty your bladder before entering the theater. You don't want to have to get up during the middle of this one; something might get you.

One of the things that makes this a really scary flic is the sense of absolute normality that pervades the first part of the movie. Great stuff.

The special effects (by ILM) were excellent. The plot was only fair.

As you may have heard in press reports (a city in Texas sued
unsuccessfully to have the PG rating upgraded to R), Poltergiest is not
recommended for small children. As Gene Siskel said on Sneak Previews, "If I
saw this movie when I was seven years old, I wouldn't go to bed until I was
twelve."
I found it to be much more fun than scary for adults--a well paced,
delightful build-up of apprehensiveness, and then things happen fast enough to
supply a constant stream of thrills, with a good measure of humor thrown in too.
