[comp.sys.ibm.pc] nethack 3.0 on the PC

Has anyone gotten Nethack 3.0 to successfully compile/run on the PC ?
We can get it to compile, but it is too large to fit into memory.
It is possible to get it it compile/run with almost all the options
turned off, but that makes the game no fun -- we tried to kluge it
together with MSC overlays, again it compiled but wouldn't execute
properly. Anyone done this one before ?

Yes, you can get it to compile and run with all of it's features turned
on. You need to put loads of things in overlays and set up some "stub" routines
(since pointers to functions in overlays doesn't work).

You also need either an amazingly fast hard disk or a big ram disk or a
good disk cache cause you're going to load overlays every time you move (or
nearly) and that's real slow (and I mean real slow).

A friend and I were pretty close to having this bug free on patch level
2 code. I haven't yet built it into patchlevel 5 (latest) to see how it works.
