[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Cache On Gateway PC/AT Compatibles

davely@mcrware.UUCP (Dave Lyons) (11/14/89)

I received a question about how we liked our Gateway 2000 386 machine
and couldn't get our mailer to send the reply back so I'm posting here.
Hopefully it has enough general interest content to not be a complete
waste of net resources.

We haven't had our machine too long (it's a 25Mhz) but so far
it's been working pretty good. From what we've been able to see
the cache makes a very big difference. Without the cache our
operating system (OS-9000, not MS-DOS) got about ~2300 dhrystones
and with it got ~3900. I don't know how much they charge for it
but if it's not too much I would definitely recommend it. I've
heard that people are buying 25Mhz machines with cache because
they turn out to be faster than 33Mhz ones without cache. That's
an unsubstantiated rumor though.

I hope this helps...
