Help!!! IBM-PC 8087 DIP Switch Settings?

A co-worker has an ancient IBM-PC (Not an XT), and he is trying to
install the 8087 math coprocessor. The coprocessor came with a sheet
that suggested switching DIP switch 1 position 2 on for the new processor.
The switch was already on before the coprocessor was installed. When the
coprocessor is installed, the machine dies with a parity check 2 error.
If the switch is set to off, the machine will get the same error with or
without the coprocessor. The error does not affect some dos commands like
dir, but kills things like Norton's SI. I looked through the IBM manuals
and noticed that neither DIP switch had any coprocessor options at all.
The coprocessor socket was shown in the board layout.
Does anybody know what you need to do to install an 8087 on an old PC?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
