[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Flaky ESDI drive behavior

jb@aablue.UUCP (John B Scalia) (11/23/89)

Hi, I got a strange problem with a hard disk drive (ESDI) that I was
hoping someone on the net might have encountered. (Roy@adaptex are
you here?)

The problem is basically as follows: We installed an Imprimis 160mb
ESDI Wren III drive using an Adaptec 2322B controller in an Everex
Step 386/20 with 2mb of ram. This unit also has the 2nd serial port
option and a Paradise VGA+16 graphics card, just for the info. Both
the controller and the drive came from other machines and have not
ever been used together, although, both units were performing what
we considered proper in their old units. (We had to do some swapping
due to customer warranty work.)

What's happening is that the Everex reports a drive error:

	Hard Disk unit 0 error
	<F1> to continue

whenever the unit is booting, warm or cold. If you press <F1> and
answer no to "Do you want to perform setup?" which follows, the drive
will boot. I should note that, and this is the really wierd part,
that the drive boots with NO error messages from a power-up cold
boot, but gives the above error if you do a CTL-ALT-DEL reset or
hit the Everex's reset button on it's led panel.

We have low-level formated and reinstalled Dos twice; we did one low
level using Everex's disk utilities and after encountering this
problem we did a new low level, etc. using the Adaptec Bios. We've
also checked and double checked the CMOS.

I'm stumped, any suggestions?

Just a little more nonsense to clutter up the net.
