[comp.sys.ibm.pc] WD Controller Help Needed

paone@aramis.rutgers.edu (Phil Paone) (11/21/89)

Hi,

I have an extra disk drive and MFM controller and I would like to
add them to my 386 machine. The controller is a WA3-16 controller and
I believe it is made by western digital. There are various jumpers on
the board (E1-E6), J7 and J1 and I was wondering if anyone could tell
me if any of these jumpers either set the controller ID or change the
interrupt vector of both.

I know the software will support a two MFM controller setup, so all
I need is your help with the hardware...HELP!

Thanks,
Phil Paone

According to my Hardware Installation Guide for the WA3-16 I just purchased:

Pin Connects Description
E2 to E3 Standard factory setting. Selects primary addresses.
E5 to E6 Standard factory setting. Selects primary addresses.
E1 to E2 Selects secondary setting.
E4 to E5 Selects secondary setting.
J6 Open Factory setting. Precompensation = 125ns.
J6 Short Precompensation value = 187ns.
J7 Open Factory setting.
J7 Short Two speed spindle type drive used.

NOTE:
DO NOT MOVE PRIMARY ADDRESS JUMPERS UNLESS THE OPERATING SYSTEM IS CONFIGURED
TO ACEPT (sic) TWO HARD DISK CONTROLLERS. CERTAIN OPERATING SYSTEMS SUPPORT
TWO CONTROLLERS IN THE SAME SYSTEM. IBM DOS AND MOST IBM-COMPATIBLE OPERATING
SYSTEMS DO NOT SUPPORT THIS FEATURE.

I installed this in a system I configured for my father (without changing any
of the "factory settings", and it worked fine). I don't know what they mean
by "primary address" and "secondary address", but maybe that's the hook you
are looking for?
