[comp.sys.ibm.pc] ATI VGA Wonder 512 and NEC MS 4D Monitor

bierach@gold.Berkeley.EDU (Jeff Bierach) (11/29/89)

I just put an ATI VGA Wonder in my 286/12 AT Clone. Attached
to this is my new NEC Multisync 4D monitor. BIG Stuff!

1. The 132 column mode driver for Lotus 123 does not work. It seems
like a "Sync" problem. I see four or five repeated columns. This
problem also occurs when I use VConfig? or VSetup? to set the video
mode to 132 columns. There is a "Sync" switch on the back which
I have turned on and off. The book says that it should be on ...
I think. Is this a problem with the ATI drivers or is the 4D not
fully compatible with the ATI Video Wonder?

2. I don't know what the output signal level from the ATI card is. The
4D has a switch on the front for 0.7/1.0 V. It doesn't appear to make
too much of a difference, but could it harm the monitor if set
    incorrectly?

3. I am experimenting with the ATI Bus Mouse using my Logimouse drivers.
It appears to work ok, including the menu program, but when I load
Sidekick Plus, the menu program returns "Mouse Driver Not Found".
Should I change the IRQ level? Right now it is set to the default
    value of IRQ.

Does anyone know where I can get additional/updated drivers for the
ATI VW? Can I use "generic" VGA drivers, or are the drivers by nature
hardware dependent?

The good news is that I get a great (big!) 50 line mode with Turbo Pascal
and with Lotus Manuscript 2.1. And the ATI is much faster than my old
Everex EGA card. I have yet to play with any good Extended Mode
(1024x768x16) graphics software.

You can reply to me by mail or on the net.

Thanks.
