[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Memory cards...

jca@pnet01.cts.com (John C. Archambeau) (12/04/89)

I have a friend who's in a bind. He has an old 8 MHz 286 motherboard with an
embedded floppy drive controller. Anyway, here's what he wants to do. He
would like a memory card that supports up to 4 Mb of memory. I recommended
the AST Rampage 286 to him, but it is out of his price range. Since he's not
that technically literate either, I also set an additional criteria for the
card, it must support LIM EMS 4.0 as well as standard extended memory. I
don't care if the card supports DRAMs, SIMMs, or SIPPs, just as long as it
works. I don't care if it's a cheap generic clone card either. A distributor
or dealer for such a card would be appreciated.

I personally would wait till I had the bucks for the AST Rampage Plus 286, but
he can't. Fortunately, if memory serves me correctly, there are sockets on
his motherboard for an additional 512K of memory.

If it's just more cost effective to chuck the motherboard for a newer 286
board that supports 8 Mb of memory, please inform me of this also.

Since I don't want to clutter the net with trivial responses since I have a
solution, albeit expensive, to the problem, please send responses via e-mail.
I'll summarize for the tightwad people who don't want to spend a fortune on
cards from major manufacturers if I get enough response in e-mail for it. :)
