[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Compaq beeps ...

dan@blender.UUCP (Dan Keizer) (11/15/89)

I've inherited at work a compaq 286 portable. It has one annoying problem,
instead of beeping once as normal pc's do when they boot, this thing beeps
twice. At one point in time, it wouldn't boot of the hard disk, which
required a "fine adjustment" to fix. Still works fine, yet why is it
beeping twice. Is this an error report of some type? There are no
messages as such at the boot process, so I'm a little perplexed.
Any answers?
BTW: Has anyone ever heard of a company called ANO. They're distributors/
resellers of systems they assemble in Vancouver somewhere I think (or some
suburb of it). We got one in the office, and I'd like to know what others
have to say.

But it boots okay right ? Well, there is really no standard governing
how many beeps are you supposed to produce on power on. Don't know about
Compaq, but the HP Vectra QS/20 at work here produces two beeps on power
on. For a while I thought something was not installed correctly.

I use a Compaq SLT/286 portable. It beeps always twice when it boots.
It has always done that. I think it is normal. (Actually, I *hope*...)

Yes, it is normal. It is telling you that it is starting up in the
faster of the two speeds it runs. E.g. 8 Mhz instead of 6 Mhz for a
6/8 Mhz Compaq 286, or 12 Mhz instead of 8 Mhz for a 8/12 Mhz Compaq.

If it beeps once, its saying I'm starting in the lower speed. Hope this
helps.

Cheers!

It beeps twice when the processor clock rate is set the fastest, and
once when the clock rate is the slowest. I don't think this is
documented; I found it by trial and error. See docs on mode speed
command.
