Hello. I have a quick question: Can the Seagate 251-1 (40mb, 28ms) be run with an RLL controller? What about the Miniscribe 43 MB 25 ms (I forget what model no. it is) ? I'm getiing a new computer that will probably have an RLL, and I want to know what drives will take advantage of it. Thanks for any info! It will probably work as well, but I'd need a model number to take a good crack at it. The big thing is a spec called "Window Margin". ST251s have this on the data sheet. As long as you have nothing over 60ns you should be ok; I've seen a few with slop exceeding this work, but a few that didn't either. Ps: Your request for a quotation is on the way as well.... :-) -- Karl Denninger (karl@ddsw1.MCS.COM, <well-connected>!ddsw1!karl) Public Access Data Line: [+1 312 566-8911], Voice: [+1 312 566-8910] Macro Computer Solutions, Inc. When I bought my computer, (a 386SX with AMI Bios), I also purchased an ST251-1 hard drive (40 Meg, 28ms). Checking the CMOS setup, I noticed that it is type 40. Does anyone know what this type stands for or how to determine it for a different drive? Harold Shapiro hs0i+@andrew.cmu.edu

Type 40: Cylinders=820 heads=6 precomp=820 (eg none) lzone=820 41 Mb.

Most BIOS's or setup routines will allow you to enter a '?' at the drive type prompt for a list of supported types. Goos thing too, as the documentation often lags the hardware. I have also noticed a lot of bantying about of drive type numbers on this newsgroup and have come to the conclusion that these are HIGHLY system dependent. My computer says type 44 is correct for a seagate 251. (As a side note, my st251 is NOT a 251-1, yet four different disk drive benchmarks claim its access time is 28ms, not the 40ms it should be. I wonder if these are like uP and memories, they may run at a faster speed, but are only tested to a certain speed.) I wonder Just shows to go ya that you don't always get what you paid for! (My 28ms 251-1 actually measures in at 31-32ms). -Mark -- +----------------------------------------+----------------------------+ | Mark S.
