It should be obvious that TRON was originally an AI startup routine for a highly sophisticated document prepara- tion program, which was called troff.

Clearly, TRON comes from the Microsoft Basic Statement: TRON (TRace ON) which gives you a blow-by-blow of your program's execution. This means that the sequel will have to be called TROFF (TRace OFF) a title veritibly pregnant with possibilities! gordon letwin microsoft

Since some people here have been getting the origin of "TRON" in somewhat comically circumstances, I like to post a "serious" one.
