Stephen King's The Stand is a long-term project for collaboration with
George Romero (XXX  of the Dead, Knightriders, etc.).  They planned to
make one hit (hopefully Creepshow, out this October) with which to gather
the clout they'd need to get financing for The Stand.  The original plan
was to film it in two parts, but apparently this is financially impossible
and so King is trying to get the script down to one.

The Right Stuff has been filming around the Bay Area this year.  I'm not
sure of the release date but it should be this Christmas, or certainly no
later than next summer.  Director is Phillip Kaufman (Invasion of the
Body Snatchers, The Wanderers).
