We're looking for info on MS-DOS packages which include utilities for controlling software versions, managing source code, making files, and other aspects of software configuration management. A few companies that market these types of packages include: - Polytron Corp. (PVCS, PolyMake, PolyLibrarian, et al) - Seidl Computer Engineering (Version Manager, SMK, SMKgen) [this company is owned by another company now -- Pantel?] - Quilt Computing (QMAKE, SRMS) [does this company still exist?] Does anyone have any experience with these packages or know of other companies which market similar packages? Please e-mail me (or post if you want) any info and recommendations or other comments. (Also let me know if there is another newsgroup that I should post this to) Thanks -- Stephanie Shirk mail to sshirk@emdeng.Dayton.NCR.COM

Another source to check is Mortice Kern Systems. They sell UNIX(R) system compatible tools, including the MKS Toolkit (over a hundred utilities, including vi, the new awk, and the Korn shell), MKS Make, MKS Lex and Yacc, and something called MKS RCS (Revision Control System). Their tools work under MS-DOS, OS/2, and several 386-based brands of the UNIX operating system. You can get these tools bundled in various packages. Mortice Kern Systems is at 35 King St. North, Waterloo, Ontario, CANADA N2J 2W9, uunet!mks!inquiry, 519-884-2251. This software is also available via Programmer's Connection (a mail order firm), 7249 Whipple Avenue NW, North Canton, Ohio, USA 44720, 800-336-1166 (voice, USA), 800-225-1166 (voice, Canada), 216-494-3781 (voice, everywhere else), 216-494-5260 (FAX). I bought the MKS Toolkit from Progammer's Connection, and have recommended it to others who have liked it. I know some folks in my department have at least tried MKS RCS, but I don't know how they cared for it. > mail to sshirk@emdeng.Dayton.NCR.COM -- Stephanie Shirk Done! (As well as posting to the net, without the usa distribution that probably kept MKS from replying to you, and the ncr.sys.pcdos that broke my first attempt to follow up!) Paul S. R.
