[net.movies] origin of TRON

wsm (09/08/82)

In the movie "TRON", we're told that TRON is a program whose
job it is to survey all the other programs to see who's
doing what. The question my friends and I can't answer
is: Is TRON an acronym for something? What? Or is it
like UNIX(tm), a play on some other word? Mail responses
to me, I'll summarize if there is any reason or need to.

In regard to the meaning of TRON: It is definitely an acronym for something.
Roger Ebert, in his review of the movie in the Chicago Sun Times, mentioned
what it stood for. I can't for the life of me remember what it was and I
haven't been able to find it anywhere else. I realize I haven't helped
solve the meaning but I did answer one question. I would also like to
know what it stands for. So keep digging and post it when someone finds
out.

TRON comes from MICROSOFT BASIC. It means trace on. Considering the
nature of the movie, it would seem to be a likely choice.
