Unless I've blinked a few too many times, I don't recall seeing very many review of The World According to Garp. If some of you have seen this movie, please put a few reviews on the net. If you have and I've missed them, I'll probable hear about it. Thanks in advance for the former and what can I say for the latter. Dennis Vogel (...!eisx!drv)

It's true that 'real' discussion of Garp has been missing; here are
a few thoughts.
First off, I was impressed at how true the movie was to the book.
Even a lot of the dialogue was carried directly over. When something
was left out, it was left out completely. When something was added, it
was so "Garpish" that it seemed like John Irving was personally putting
in things that he wished he had put in the book. Does anyone know if
Irving was involved in making the film?
Mostly, the reason that I liked the movie (and the book) was that it
really had thought behind it. I usually say that a movie like this has
"consciousness". I found that it touched a lot of different emotions in
me just because of its humanity. There have been a lot of good movies
lately, but I can't think of one that has the sheer depth of Garp.
I also couldn't say enough about the casting/acting. The portrayal
of the characters really made the movie come alive. This was especially
suprising because of the complexity of Irving's characters.

This movie is one of the better films that I have seen for this year so far. It carries thru with most of the book's contents and whatever that was left out was minimal. This movie has depth, for leaving out minimal material in other movies could do harm to the film but in 'Garp' this doesn't hold true. I highly reccommended this film for it puts society on the spot many times and is surely a conversational piece. Don't miss it and if you do the book is great as well!

Irving as directly involved in the movie; in fact, he appears as the referee in the wrestling match.
