[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Adding a 5.25" drive to a PS/2

philip@hubcap.clemson.edu (Philip L Harshman) (01/02/90)

I'm posting this for a friend, so forgive me if I don't have everything quite
right. Also, I would prefer E-mail responses to posted replies. Thank you.

I have recently purchased an IBM PS/2 M55 SX and am trying to add a 5.25"
drive to it. Can I take a 5.25" 1.2M/360kB internal diskette drive from an
IBM 80286 XT and put it in a box with a power supply and connect it to my
PS/2 via the IBM adapter (part # 6451007, feature #1007)? This adapter is
the one that is required for the IBM PS/2 external disk drives. I have someone
that is willing to sell me then XT drive and help in the wiring, but I would
like to know if it is possible before I waste my time trying.

Failing this, does anyone know of any other cheap way to get an external 5.25"
drive attached to a PS/2 M55 SX? The M55 SX has a microchannel bus and has
no room for a B diskette drive so the external drive will have to have a
controller on its adapter card.

Any information about cheap drives and controllers would be most appreciated!

That's it. send the info to me, and I'll forward it to my friend. Thanks
for your support.

The true blue IBM external 5 1/4 drives are expensive - about $400 for the
drive and $65 for the adapter card. And this is only a 360k drive.

A local (large) computer store advertises a couple of non-IBM external drives.
I don't know anything about their quality or capabilities, but they may
fit your needs.

External Floppy Drives

BSM (don't know what it stands for)
5 1/4 inch PS/2 1.2 MB	$169
5 1/4 inch PS/2 360k	$169

Pacific Rim
5 1/4 inch PS/2 360k	$169

The local dealer is called Soft Warehouse (703) 749-4400. They also have
stores in Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Miami, Philadelphia, LA area
and the San Franciso area.

I have no connection with this dealer, other than as a customer.
