[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Adaptec 1542 quirk

mattioli@TOOK.DEC.COM (John R. Mattioli) (01/06/90)

I'm using a 1542 SCSI and floppy controller and have had lots of good
luck installing the thing. I like the card very much. I've only got two
questions:

	1. My dealer told me I would be getting software with the controller and
I didn't. Was I supposed to have gotten anything? Is this dealer dependent?
Can I get any from Adaptec or netland (without ftp access)? I plan on contacting
my dealer and asking, but I thought I'd ask here also. By the way, the dealer
is Hard Drives International.

	2. I've got this game called Wizardry. It's a floppy that's gotta be
booted. The game was written using the UCSD P-system, so when it boots it isn't
msdos booting. In fact, using the 1542, it doesn't even boot. It just gives me
an error message and hangs the system. Any clues? The error is about as useful
as "error number #x" and, I believe, is generated by the P-system.

No software comes with the AHA-154x adapter. As it comes it has an INT13 AT
BIOS, so it would plug in and go for MS-DOS. SCO and ISC both support the
adapter so no need for XENIX/UNIX software for these two flavors.

If the boot disk does not use the INT13 BIOS and talks directly to the I/O
controller, then the software would have to know about the AHA-154x adapter.
The adapter is not register/port compatible with the standard ST-506
controller. I beleive this may be the problem. First time I have heard of
this game.
