[comp.sys.ibm.pc] PS emulation

jin@eecg.toronto.edu (Jinwon Kim) (01/10/90)

I am thinking of purchasing something that will allow our
HP LaserJet II to emulate PostScript and would like some
opinions and suggestions. So far, I only know of Pacific
Page which is a LJ II cartridge that seems reasonably priced.
Does anyone have any experience with this product?
Does anyone have any experience with other similar products?
How about software emulators like PreScript from Pan Oversea
Computers or Ultra Script?

Please post responses here or email me at jin@eecg.toronto.edu
Thank you

As one "Un-Happy Camper" after trying to get UltraScript to work on a
system and configuration that "should work", I vote for either the
 PostScript-In-A-Cartridge or an Add-On board.

The advantage to the Cartridge is that it is completely [8-)]
separated from your PC and the PC's configuration, operating system,
etc. Just send PCL down the right wire and it will (should) work.
Who cares whether you run HIMEM/LOWMEM or NoMEM [8-)], etc.

All of the reviews of the Pacific Data PS cart have been good, except
in the area of speed (and you need 2.5Mb of memory).

On the other hand, Hewlett-Packard just announced a Postscript cart
licensed from (THE) Adobe. No idea about extra memory, but list
 price is $995.

GoScript is a reasonable alternative if you can't afford the LJ II cartridge.
I bought my copy at SoftWarehouse for less than $270. You need to have the 1
meg LJ II RAM upgrade (for full page 300 dpi), but a standard AT will work
reasonably well with it. BTW, I bought the PLUS version of GoScript with 34
fonts. The standard version is about half the price.

Just a satisfied customer.
