BBS upgrades for PCTools (to 5.5 from 5.1) include at least one .COM file where PCT has an .EXE file (or vice versa). Anyone know why? --- * Via ProDoor 3.1R ~ RNet 1.03F: Synapse BBS - Gatineau PQ - (819) 561-5268

Central Point charges fifteen or twenty dollars for the upgrade disks. I'd ask them if it's kosher to swap the new files. (It'd be nice if it was; I could walk upstairs and get them from my brother-in-law.) BTW, from what I've heard, the 5.1->5.5 upgrade files are encrypted with the 5.1 encryption tool, so the files are only useful if you already have the software. (PC Tools is a nice package; I'm quite happy with it, as are the people who've bought it on my recommendation.) > Michael Schaap, msschaa@cs.vu.nl Paul S. R. I'd loike one too. Would it be worth posting it to comp.binaries.ibm.pc? As I understand it, the upgrade is encrypted and only PCTools 5.1 can decrypt it, so only current owners would be able to make use of the upgrade. When I called the PCTools bulletin board they specifically indicated that they did not want the upgrade posted elsewhere. If you actually want the PC Shell and PC Desktop (?, I forget the name of the other large file) I suggest buying the upgrade, only $20 and you get the manual. It was a moderate hassle just to download and decript the utilities.

Anybody can make a copy of PCTools 5.0 and then use it to decrypt >5.5 (:-). Pardonnez moi. Let me rephrase: only current owners and current pirates can use the upgrade. But anyone who has an illegal copy of 5.0 can probably get an illegal copy of 5.5 anyway. The upgrade to 5.5 is, I think, about 900K compressed. Since CPS will send you the upgrade for ~$20, it's probably not worth dialing up their BBS and paying the phone charges while you download. I would also understand if Rahul doesn't want to post 900K of code for a limited audience (as one person commented to me via mail.) (Although, in a sense, each posting is for a limited audience, since many people won't be interested in a particular application.) But I figured it couldn't hurt to ask... Concerning the recent discussion about whether to post the PC-Tools 5.5 upgrades to the net (or elsewhere): Since the upgrades are encrypted, only users with an earlier version of PC-Tools can make use of them. Since Central Point does not verify callers to its BBS, pirates who have an illegal earlier version can download the upgrades just like licensed users. This suggests that Central Point should make life easier for legitimate users and permit the distribution of the upgrades on BBSs and USENET (depending on net policy about distributing commercial software). When I wrote to Central Point and suggested this, they replied that they did not permit posting or circulation of upgrades because that was the only way they could monitor the integrity of the files. Given the headaches they have had because of bugs in versions 5.0 and 5.1 (especially PC-Backup), one hacked file could cost them a bundle in good will. While I think they may be more worried than necessary, their con- cern is legitimate, they have a right to restrict distribution, and I think we have an obligation to respect that restriction. --David ============================================================ David J. FACT: Well, no, they really DON'T charge for the upgrade. They have a BBS (and don't send mail asking for the number: it's in your documentation) where you can, for the price of a 'phone call, download the latest and (allegedly) greatest version. OPINION: But I don't think it should be posted to the binaries newsgroup (although it would be nice if _something_ would show up there soon :-). (Cannot delete my own inquiry, now answered.) Ugrade to PCTools 5.5 (from 5.1) distributed via BBSs, must be made separately, file by file, for each of the 6 or 7 modules of PCTOOLS. Reason: the upgrades are distributed in two flavours, one of which processes a set of four files through a .BAT file, and the other half dozen separately, as self-unpacking (LHARC) archives. All you do is run what purports to be the PCTOOLS file, which then overwrites itself (often) and generates both a .DOC and a RUNME.BAT file for decryption (using your existing PCTOOLS 5.1). The point is that the syntax of each upgrade process is the same, so if you try to process a set of them by a .BAT file you will get hopelessly lost. Main thing is, the upgrade is well worth-while: more commands, and above all most 2-key commands now replaced by 1-key commands. --- ~ Via ProDoor 3.2aR ~ RNet 1.03F: Synapse BBS - Gatineau PQ - (819) 561-5268

When I first heard that the upgrade was available on 'a' BBS, I thought it was free myself! But I found out that the upgrade is _ONLY_ available from the Central Point BBS in Oregon (I believe). To download the entire upgrade at 2400 baud takes aproximately 90 mins. Does this still sound "FREE" to you??? Not me. But some people don't mind grabbing it themselves and not having to wait for it to be shipped. Geez, not all of us honest people have original disks to all commercial software/upgrades!
