Some months ago it occured to me that ET was parallel in some ways to the life of JC. Better yet, while I can't remember my list of parallels (serves me right for not posting here!), I didn't feel reminded of many of them by the previous articles here -- which means I must have noticed some additional parallels, which strengthens the argument for the theory, which would piss off my Enlgish teachers for running a one- sentence paragraph. Can't type either. I think I mentioned it to my wife, an Episcopal priest who also adored the flick, and if I remember right she considered it too obvious (the JC parallel) to bother discussing! The rainbow at the end is of course Old Testament, God's promise never again to destroy the earth by flood. SUrely someone has noticed the JC paralles with Superman stories. Here is this BABY, strangley arrived from outer space, raised by foster parents in rural hick area, gradually realising he is different as he grows up, struggling between human desires for friends & girls and his divine mission, an only child (on Krypton & Earth too). His first visit to the cave of solitude in the Arctic is like the 40-day desert fast, etc. All these myths reveal one of our race's fondest longings, namely, that some power from outside will intervene to help us realize the good side of our nature and save us from sin/evil/NUKE-END/etc. But, really, we better work on these ourselves.... PS: "Man of Steel" == "Rock of Ages", etc etc. It helps to have read Lampoon's Son-off-God comics, which only a Christian can REALLY appreciaate! Still afraid to use Reese's Pieces & Coors for Communion elements... mike
