[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Mac OSes

kempf@tci.bell-atl.com (Cory Kempf) (01/11/90)

Just to clear the air, last time I checked, the mac could run:

MacOS: (system/finder/multifinder)
Unix: at least three different unixes: AUX, MacIdris, one with a card (can't
remeber what it was called though), with strong rumors of two more
comming out "real soon now" (MacMach by Mt Xinu, Minix)
AppleDOS: IIinAMac (software)
MS-DOS:	several different ways, one of which doesn't require hardware
	(SoftPC)
And (if anybody is really interested, I have heard rumors that there
is a CPM emulator out for the mac.

Additionally, the mac can be running (subject to memory limits) any
combination of MacOS, Unix, AppleDos (I think, never actually used
it), and MS-DOS, ALL AT THE SAME TIME (though only the gods know why
you would want to).

Excuse me, but I need to put in my two cents. I thik I can show just
how silly this whole "mine can do this & yours can't ... Nyahh Nyahh Nyahh"
affair really is.

The Atari ST computer can quite easily run BOTH Macinotsh and IBM,
and quite well !
The Spectre 128 runs 128K rom applicationsfor the Macintosh very
reliably and very quickly(10-20% faster than a Mac can!).
The PC-Ditto II runs 8086 software for the PC very well also, does
a very stable Norton SI 3.0.

Each of these items costs onlyy $300 -- signifigantly less than most top of the
line alternate O/S's and/or emulators.

Keeping in mind the afore mentioned "Nyahh Nyahh" doctrine and following it
religously, I should chunk my 386-20 Clonish and go buy back that ST I sold
a year ago or so!

DON'T FLAME ME YET!!

I am NOT recommending anyone to go out and buy an Atari ST! I used to have
one, and I am extremely glad I no longer have it! I now own a 386 PC, and
am quite happy with it, I have paid for it easily with "pick up" work for
local companies, etc. and truly enjoy it.

I would also like another computer! Yes, a Mac SE/30 would be real nice
on another desk! Come time to write a paper for school, I could be the
"bear from hell" (Gary Larson).

I cast my vote for... about $10,000 worth of both PC & Macintosh, with a
laser printer that can handle both!

The NeXT thing I wish for is.....

OS/9 is also ported to the Macintosh platform.

The beauty with OS/9, MacIdris and the MS-DOS Operating system
emulations is that they run under MultiFinder in separate windows...

So for instance if you want a MacOS base operating system with UNIX
facilities, go for example for MacIdris, if you want a UNIX platform
with capabilities to run Mac binaries, go for A/UX.
