[comp.sys.ibm.pc] System in Death Throes

I'm getting some disturbing messages on a clone machine.

The machine boots properly but if it sits idle for a while, I will
get the dreaded "unable to access ... Abort, Retry, Ignore" messages.

The other day, I got a "Unable to access FAT1 ... Unable to access FAT2"
type message. Rebooting the machine made the problem disappear for a while.

I would guess that the hard disc needs re-formatting, at the least.
Does it need a low level reformat too?
What else should be checked?

Try throwing out your disk caching software if any.

Thanks to those who responded by email.

The problem was a flaky HD controller. All is well now.
