[net.movies] Creepshow

Can anyone give a non-spoiler sort of review
of this movie before I spend my money on it?
Is it worth four bucks?

This movie is schlock, but is really good schlock. In other words,
King & Romero did exactly what they set out to do.

For those who haven't heard, Creepshow is an homage to the EC horror
comics of the fifties, to the extent of imitating insofar as is possible
the comic itself. The movie is a collection of five stories, bound
together by animation of a Creepshow comic book blowing in the wind. You
know, first panel dissolves into first scene, freeze-frame at end
dissolves into last panel, etc. What struck me is how successful the
comic book elements are; the comic has the usual sendaway ads for sucker
items, and the film is shot like a comic book, with all kinds of wierd
camera angles, and lighting that gets lurid and supersaturated when the
strangelings are about. That, and other touches, are beautifully executed.

I should add that comedy is a strong element here. King and Romero
know that the two are necessary complements, and the show is far stronger
on laughs than I expected. I saw it with a dense crowd late on Saturday
night, and to judge from the crowd's reactions, I expect this one to be
a big hit. I give it a solid ***.

   PS The score is brilliant.

Just saw "Creepshow", and I thought it was a rip-off, even at the
$1.50 matinee price. The movie revolves around a comic book, and
basically makes "real life" out of the things in the comics.

The acting itself isn't too bad, but everything else is. The stories
are so lame and ridiculous that they just seem stupid. I got the
impression from the previews that this was supposed to be a comedy.
If it was, it missed. The monsters in the film are also pretty bad,
the makeup ranks right up there with your average B horror film from
	10-20 years ago.

If you can avoid this movie, by all means do. If you have to take
someone to it, or someone wants to take you to it, bring a book.
