[comp.sys.ibm.pc] 1.44M vs. 720K floppy drives

mlm@cs.brown.edu (Moises Lejter) (01/22/90)

I have an IBM PC/XT compatible manufactured by Atari at home
(PC-3 is its model number), and it comes with a built-in
floppy disk controller. It also comes with a connector on the
back that fits an Atari 3.5" 720K external floppy drive.
The question is: what are chances that I could just plug in a
3.5" 1.44M external floppy drive instead (assuming I can get a
connector that fits both ends) and have it work as a
high-density floppy? Is there anything special about the high
density drives that needs a special controller? If so, are
there workarounds? (things like TSRs, I guess, that would be
used instead of the regular BIOS...).

	Thanks for any information.
