[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Possible lurking virus problemer

pdccs@unix.cis.pitt.edu (Patrick D. Champion) (01/18/90)

Hello. Does anyone know of a virus that deletes the root directory on drive C?
I have run into this problem 3 times on so far - once on each of three PCs.
I have run SIMTEL's scan42 and when I download scan52 will run that also. But
they come up with no virus's. Also, the command.com hasn't grown, nor the to
system files.
Any ideas anyone? I could run a program to check for viruses
writing to .EXE or .COM files, but my bosses don't look favourably on anything
running on the PC's besides the software that we bought.

Thanks for the help

Well, if your bosses have any brains in their heads, I'm sure that given the
choice between you running a harmless vaccine program than to have a harmful
virus running itself. That is, unless the data and programs on the computers
are meaningless to their business, which I rather doubt.

Instead of a virus, what about just a "nasty" practical joke, where:

SCANVIR.BAT consists of

When a user types SCANVIR, instead of running SCANVIR.COM or SCANVIR.EXE
they will instead delete all root dir files. It could be a simple explana-
