[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Zeos PC?

gupta@ux1.cso.uiuc.edu (01/17/90)

My roommate is thinking of purchasing a Zeos PC clone that he saw
advertised in the most recent issue of PC. The ad made it look like
the greatest thing since sliced bread (as would be expected) - and
it seemed like a steal at $1395 for monitor, 16Mhz PC, and 32Mb
hard drive.

I told him to hold off until I checked in net-land to see if anyone
has ever heard of and/or used a Zeos. Please email all replies because
I do not read this newsgroup.

Thanks,
Rohit

My brother is also thinking of purchasing a Zeos (386SX) and I'd
appreciate any information from owners on the PC and the company.
Also any info on customer support/experiences would be appreciated.

He was interested in the Gateway 2000 386SX, but it's rated as a
Class A machine (not recommended for home use).

Here is a summary of what I received. Thanks to all who replied!

Hi,
I have a friend that runs into problem with the Zeos, I think is
reliability related. I would go for Northgate or Gateway, since
they receive very good reviews from the Net-users.

In your article you were making reference to the Zeos (286)?
I have a friend who just bought a 'full blown' system from
Zeos and is very happy with the system and the support. The
only thing that I would not get is the 32 meg HD. They are
	infamous for crashing.

Hi,

I've got a Zeos system like the one your roommate is looking at (are
you sure it's not 12MHz?). Seems pretty solid. I haven't had any
problems with it, although I haven't hammered on it either. I would
recommend it.

I have a Zeos 386/20 from last September. Problems I have had are:
Fastback+ v2.09 won't run faster than Low DMA, my Microsoft Bus Mouse won't
install in interrupt 5 (I think this means IRQ5, but the MS manual is
vague). Other than that it's a great machine. The keyboard is one of the
best I've used (competes with Northgate; Zeos also sells their keyboards
seperately). My machine uses the AMI BIOS, a Mylex motherboard and a
Seagate HD.

I purchased a Zeos 386/25 tower system about nine months back, and
while I never used the stock machine I bought (immediately upon
receiving the system, I swapped in my PerStor ARLL HD/FD controller, a
VGA card, a Northgate keyboard, an extra HD, a 3.5" FD, different I/O
cards, and a MultiSync 3D, I haven't had any trouble with it after
the first two days -- the system board had been assembled with the
80387 inserted in the socket wrong (the coprocessor socket will take
either a Weitek m1187 or a 80387, and the assembler had misinserted
the 80387). Zeos customer service was courteous and quick, and had
me ship the system box back at their expense (up to UPS Blue), and
had it back to me a week later with the problem fixed (the technical
support people couldn't ID the problem over the phone [the system
hung on power-up after completing the diagnostics] and wanted to get
the machine back so they could look at it).

Look in the latest issue of P.C. Magazine they compare a whole
bunch of 386SX including the Zeos.

I and three freinds have independently selected Zeos, one of them over
a year ago (mine's brand new). We're all quite pleased. I've been
out to their plant (they're local to me, in Minneapolis) and it looks
pretty real and pretty busy. I've had reasonably good luck with their
technical support on some non-trivial questions, too (and it's now 24
hours 7 days). While nobody is perfect, I'm happy with Zeos.

(The particular model you mention was recently chosen as a pc magazine
editor's choice in their 386sx roundup; for whatever that's worth.)

I know of only 1 person with a Zeos 386. The hard drive crashed (SCSI)
within a few days, but they sent a new drive in a day or two even before he
returned the defective one. Sounds like good support, but I wonder about
SCSI drives.
