[comp.sys.ibm.pc] HELP: IBM PC/AT DIAGNOSTICS -- LARGE FORMAT DISK TYPE SETUP

annala@neuro.usc.edu (A J Annala) (02/03/90)

I am trying to add a large format Bell Technologies "Bell B86" hard disk
drive to a vintage IBM PC/AT. The Bell 86 is actually made by Toshiba &
appears to have the following format parameters:

Cylinders=830  Heads=10  Sectors=17  Precomp=415  Total_Bytes=72,155,648

I can't even find Bell Technologies (they were in Freemont CA at one time
... but they appear to have been spun off by AT&T ... and may have moved
to someplace in oregon under another name). Could some kind soul out in
netland email me some advice about what DISK TYPE to specify in the PCAT
basic diagnostic setup program and tell me how to partition and format as
much of this disk as possible. I have pc dos 3.3 or ms dos 4.01 available
to install and format this disk. I understand ms dos 4.01 supports large
format disks. Does pc dos 3.3 provide similar support? Is there some pd
partition editing program available to set up a large partition.

Subsidiary questions:

o Does anyone have a complete table of PC/AT DISK TYPE setup parameters?

o How do you partition this disk into one large usable partition? It does
not have to be a bootable partition ... I am installing the large disk
   as drive D ... drive C is an st2038 ...

Thanks, AJ
