I just picked up a true-blue IBM PC convertible (laptop, not car) in a swap for some other hardware. I was hoping that someone could help me in the way of information or hardware for this baby. It's very slow, and the LCD screen is difficult to read, but I can't afford one of the fancy state-of-the-art machines available today :-( Anyway, there are several questions I have, since I have a Guide to Operations but no hardware reference manaul... 1. Is it possible to add memory to this thing, as it only has 256K? I opened it up and it has 2 funny looking modules (128K each?) with surface mount chips (not dips). It looks like it has room for 2 more modules..... ??? 2. Where can I get other peripherals - a. Serial/parallel adapter b. Internal modem c. External display 3. Anyone have any of the above lying around that they want to sell? Check the back of your closet and see! 4. What are the pin-outs on that strange centronics-like plug on the back of this box? (I got a funky little printer with it that plugs right in to this - don't know yet if it works...) The convertible can be expanded up to 640K via plugin modules. IBM made two LCD displays; the second is not great, but is much clearer. The plugin modules on the back included the printer, serial/parallel adapter, and adapter for a color or monochrome display. Dan Reed Computer Science University of Illinois reed@m.cs.uiuc.edu

I purchased the IBM PC Convertible last summer and I really like it. Sure it's slow (4.77) , but as you said my pockets aren't exactly over- flowing either. I think IBM makes three screens for it. The hard to read, but manageable one, one that is slightly better, and a backlit one. As far as I know you can only purchase the External Monitor attachment, extra memory ( I got 640K ) , and the Parallel/Serial adaptor from IBM. But you better hurry, because they are coming out with their new Super Duper laptop and the old one will be put on the shelf. This will mark down the price though, because that is how I got mine, but hurry as I said. Hope you enjoy it ( I like to annoy my instructors with the keyboard clicking during their more tedious lectures ) and if you discover anything interesting or find some utilities ( maybe a way to tell how much power is left in the battery (yeah sure)) please let me know. Dear World, I'm new to this newsgroup, so please bear with me. I recently acquired a slightly-used IBM PC Convertible laptop (a bit on the slow/heavy side, but quite usable). Anyway, I have absolutely no technical info on it. What I'm looking for in particular is information on how to control power management (e.g. enable/disable power to the peripherals like the modem and serial ports when the machine is on battery power). I don't have the utility software provided with the machine (SYSPROF.COM), and would prefer to do so from within my own code anyway. Can anybody out there provide me with a map of the port and register locations for this beast together with some information on the control? All I really want to do right now is enable the modem to run on battery power instead of with the adaptor only (the default). Any help would be appreciated (preferably email to the address below).
