I'd measure the voltage present at the battery pins, check for polarity,
and replace it with carbon-zinc batteries, say, C or D size in the next
lower voltage you can get with batteries in series.  That's what I did
twice on an XT multi i/o card where the clock battery went bad after 1
year (this was a rechargeable VARTA battery).  Voltage was around 5VDC,
so I used 3 D batteries in series = 4.5 VDC.  Worked beautifully, and
the set of Radio Shack "battery of the month" cheapies didn't need
replacement for around 15 month!  Apparently carbon-zinc batteries can
be given a slight recharge.
