[comp.sys.ibm.pc] adding 2nd HD controller?

h7@cbnews.ATT.COM (c.f.hempstead) (02/03/90)

Want to add a larger, faster hard disk and two floppy drives to an
existing 286 clone (classic HP Vectra) which already has a relatively
slow 20M hard drive and 1.2M and 1.44M floppies driven by one controller.
Will there be any problems (addressing, int., etc) when I add a second
controller on the bus? Any special software needed? Am already using
drives A, B, C, D (RAMdrive), E, and F (extra floppy configurations).
Any suggestions, advice, recommendations welcome--e-mail to att!mvups!h7.
(Have external cabinet and power supply for four 1/2 height drives.)
Thank you. Chuck

Many hard drive controllers can manage two drives, although some
of these require these to be the same type.

If this is true on your system, you may just want to add a floppy
controller capable of coexistence with an existing controller. The
Compaticard has a good reputation. I noticed that JDR MicroDevices
lists an "intelligent" controller for about $50 .... they advertise
in Byte and, I believe, Computer Shopper.

I'm not familiar with the HP Vectra, but you may have to check
that the power supply is adequate for the second hard drive ... some
drives draw more power than others, especially during startup.
