[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Bernoulli drive

j08@nikhefh.nikhef.nl (Serge Wallagh) (02/02/90)

Dear readers,

I've a problem which my local hardware-farmer can't solve. But I'm sure,
somebody out here must be able to help me.
The system I have is a AT-clone, with a NEAT 286 (16/20 Mhz) motherbord,
 AMI bios.
I resently bought a Bernoulli drive, 20 Mbyte 5.25 inch from
Mountain Computer Inc.
This includes a special (full size!) 8 bits card.
And some software. (with a special driver: RCD.SYS).

This combination works fine, if my computer is running at 10 Mhz.
But if I switch it to 16 Mhz (or 20, what is also possible)
the interface card doens't recognize the drive anymore, and I get the
error message: "No RCD drive found".

Question: what is wrong?
The installation manual describes how to instal this card/drive into a
Compaq 386 machine, so it should be able to handle speeds higher than
10 Mhz.
The bus on the motherbord is (as far as I know) not affected by
the alteration of low to high speed. So that should be the problem.

Please help. What is (can be) wrong.
Btw. I have no problems with any other cards in my system.

ps. Could you pls send your answer also by email to me personally,
as I'm not a regular reader of the net.

My friend brought over his older Bernouli 8" 20Meg drive, and it also would not
work in the 12Mhz mode of my machine. It would attempt to log to the drive,
but terminate with the "General Failure reading on Drive E:" message. I am
interested in finding out if this is a limitation of the drive.

The 'older' IOMEGA drivers (ie device=rcd.sys) Don't seem to be able to
handle BUS speeds greater than 8 Mhz. If you call up IOMEGA and complain
they can send you out a new device driver that *theoretically* fixes
the problem. It is also available on their BBS. While I like the idea
of removable mass storage devices, I am hesitant to get a Bernoulli box
because the Bernoulli's that I have used are prone to all sorts of strange
errors, and IOMEGA is 'slower than molasses in January' at coming out with
device drivers for other operating systems. (read UNIX, who cares about
OS/2?) I have been looking at some of the new floptical drives out there,
and if the price ever drops into the realm of reasonableness...

As a result of my first question about the problems with the Bernouilli
drive, I got a couple of remarks.

The best 2 advices I got (at least the two that solved my problem)
were:
-get a new device driver. (I was using version 4.41, I have now 4.44+)
-add /F after the line "device=rcd.sys".

With these two fixes, things seems to work.
I also called IOMEGA, and they were (as some predicted) very helpful.
They prommised to send me the last version (version 4.71, so I'm still
a little behind with my 4.44). I expect they will do so, so my
experiance with them is ok.

It always nice to notice that people on this net are both willing
and capable of helping. You really helped me a lot!

btw. I paid $ 375 (incl. VAT) for the drive+if card. This was a special
price. What do you pay for this set (20Mb Half Hight+Card, no disks)
in the US? And what do you pay for the cartridges?
