[comp.sys.ibm.pc] Seagate 238R Hard Drive Problem Gone

ajk@mace.cc.purdue.edu (Jeff Boerio) (02/07/90)

Thanks to everyone who responded to my problem of my hard drive. For those
that didn't catch it, the disk would start spinning for an infinite amount
of time, never stopping.

I got several suggestions for doing low-level formats of the drive. Since
I didn't have any software for doing such a thing, I decided to take a
different route.

There is a program available called SST (Seek STopper). I ran it on my
drive. Out of +15000 clusters, over 13800 needed to be moved. Pretty sad,
and it had been over a year since I last ran SST.

Since running that, I have had no problems with infinite seeking, not to
mention an obvious increase in the performance of the drive!

Thanks again for everyone's suggestions. I did appreciate them.

     - Jeff
