Lucas said in a recent article that both "names" R2D2 and C3P0 were just interesting "sounds" he'd heard along the way of life. I remember that R2D2 came from his standing around one of the film editors who needed R2D2; reel 2, day 2. So much for mystical meanings Larry S.
